Transitioning into secondary school is a significant moment in a young person’s life. It brings forth changes to their personal, social, and educational environments and opens up new social dynamics and experiences. We recognise a smooth transition into secondary school is paramount as it sets the foundation for a positive and enriching learning experience. At Lilydale Heights College, we tailor programs and support systems to ensure every student steps into this new phase with confidence and a sense of belonging.
At Lilydale Heights College the transition team spend time understanding each child individually by speaking with primary schools and engaging with their families. For those students who may be the sole representative from their primary school, we offer a Pre-Orientation Day to ensure they feel welcomed and prepared. Our Orientation Day is a pivotal experience where students have the chance to familiarise themselves with our school, meet new peers and staff, and begin forming connections within their Year 7 cohort. To further assist our new students we offer a Peer Support Program, where experienced Year 10 students provide guidance and support.
Our transition program is not limited to the beginning of the year. We understand that the transition process begins in Grade 6 and continues throughout Year 7. In response to this we have designed a unique transition program alongside specific support programs and groups to ensure Year 7 students feel comfortable and confident as they embark on their secondary school journey. We seek information from parents and Grade 6 teachers to ensure we are well versed in student academic and social needs. Our classes are carefully constructed and teachers are informed of a wealth of transition information to ensure we support students from the moment they start at the college.
The Year 7 Camp early in the year provides opportunities for students to build confidence, foster teamwork, and develop independence. This camp not only enhances their social skills but also creates lasting memories and friendships.
