Year 9

Building Independence, Purpose and Pathways

In Year 9, students begin a transformative journey where they explore their learning strengths and engage with a more challenging and enriching curriculum. This stage marks a pivotal shift toward greater independence, deeper inquiry, and future-focused learning.

Academic Growth

Students in Years 9 are introduced to inquiry-based learning units that encourage independent thinking, planning, and problem-solving. These units are carefully designed to build the foundational knowledge and skills essential for success in Senior School. Through engaging and thought-provoking content, students develop confidence in their abilities and begin to take ownership of their learning journey.

SELF Program: Social Justice and

The Student Engagement in Learning for the Future (SELF) program in Year 9 Resilience and Future Pathways in SELF

As part of the Year 9 Student Engagement in Learning for the Future (SELF) program, students participate in The Resilience Project, an initiative that promotes positive mental health and wellbeing. Through engaging presentations, interactive curriculum, and practical tools. Students learn evidence-based strategies to build resilience and happiness.

The program focuses on the core pillars of:

  • Gratitude – recognising and appreciating the positives in life
  • Empathy – understanding and connecting with others
  • Mindfulness – being present and aware in the moment

In addition, students explore:

  • Emotional Literacy – identifying and expressing emotions effectively
  • Connection – fostering meaningful relationships
  • Physical Health – understanding the link between physical activity and mental wellbeing

These elements are woven into the SELF curriculum to support students in developing lifelong skills for emotional strength, self-awareness, and community engagement.

As part of the Careers and Future SELF program, students:

  • Learn how to write resumes and cover letters
  • Participate in a Future SELF Careers Expo
  • Complete career interest and skills surveys
  • Receive a personalised career pathways Morrisby Report
  • Engage in one-on-one careers counselling with a trained professional to support subject selection for Year 10 and beyond

This future-focused approach empowers students to make informed decisions about their education and career aspirations.

City Experience: Confidence Through Exploration

A highlight of the Year 9 program is the City Experience. This immersive experience enables students to explore Melbourne’s diverse cultural, educational, and recreational offerings while developing independence, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the real world. The week-long experience fosters personal growth and strengthens students’ connection to the broader Melbourne community, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
